The 2003 Toyota Camry is one of the best used cars in its price range. It’s remarkable how many of these cars are still on the road twenty years after their debut thanks to a durable powertrain and a pair of reliable engines. If you can find one in good shape, you’ll have a hard time believing it debuted in the early ’00s.
The Good
The 2003 Toyota Camry is an excellent used car. Reliable, affordable, and comfortable, a used 2003 Camry with 150,000 miles on the odometer could easily go another fifty, hundred thousand miles on the original powertrain.
The Bad
There’s not much to complain about in a 2003 Camry, but it is a twenty year old car, so expect repairs for things like exhaust pipes and fidgety door locks to pile up over time. The 2003 Hyundai Elantra might be the better deal overall, selling at about half the cost of a comparable Camry.
Is the 2003 Toyota Camry a Good Used Car?
- Overall Rating 8/10 – In this price range, and in this size class, the 2003 Camry is simply one of the best, most reliable, and most comfortable used cars on the market today.
- Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – The trunk is plenty spacious, there’s plenty of pockets and cupholders and nooks and crannies to be found inside, and the suspension still rides smooth after two decades of loyal service.
- Reliability 7/10 – It’s a 2003 model, so it’s going to be more high-maintenance than a new car. But you’ll be surprised at just how easy it is to keep it running.
- Safety 7/10 – The 2003 Camry scored decent crash test numbers with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but the now-outdated onboard safety tech was basic even for 2003.
- Gas Mileage 7/10 – Expect to get about 23/33 miles to the gallon, city/highway. There are new vehicles that struggle to achieve that.Value 8/10 – There are cheaper used cars out there, but few that give you this much bang for your buck.

The car color is different. I only see this color on this model of car
My car is very reliable. Gas economy is very good, can get a lot of miles in per gallon. Is small but can fit a lot if your careful. It is small and compact but runs like a champ. Has a hard time going up hills though. Seats are comfortable and adjustable, but not heated. Windows are electric motor and work just fine.

The Camry is cheap and reliable.
This is the third Toyota Camry I've ever owned, I prefer this car over any other 4 door car. The main issue I have noticed about these cars have been oil leaks, not too bad, but they leak over time. My most recent issue with my 2003 Toyota Camry was the radiator needing replaced, which in my opinion, that's not too bad considering you can change it yourself with help from YouTube videos and save money. The radiator costed me $145 at my local auto parts store and so I spent less than $200 be replacing the part myself. I would recommend the Camry to anyone I know who is looking for a reliable, gas friendly, smooth riding vehicle.

2003 Camry, family and commuter car.
We love our Camry, it gets good gas mileage and the ride is very comfortable. We drive 80 miles a day for our computer. The interior is very roomy, plenty of foot room in the back for the kids even with my 6 foot 2 husband. It has a reliable engine, haven't had any problems with it. Just routine care.

My Toyota Camry; a love story.
I love my Toyota Camry. It has 220K miles on it and I would not hesitate to hop in it and take a trip. It is my third Camry. My other 2 went well over 200K miles. There were minor issues with them, but once they were fixed run great until it came time to part with them.

The Toyota Camry is great for long road trips or just everyday needs.
I have a Toyota Camry and I love it! The car was sold to me by my dad (who owned it for about 5 years beforehand) about three years ago and it has never failed me. The Camry is great for long car trips or everyday use. I have always liked Toyota and at 150 thousand miles, mine is still going strong! My goal is to try to make it to 300 thousand but I think it can go a lot further! It has plenty of legroom for every passenger and even comfy to sleep in! The trunk is absolutely massive as is the elbow room. It drives very smooth on the road and can pick up when it needs to. Definitely a long term care.

Toyota Camry 2003: A Great Car
It runs very smooth, and it is very reliable. It accelerates quickly with its 4 cylinder motor. It is automatic. If the tires are good, then the vehicle rides very smoothly, and the suspension is really good, as well. This is a very good beginner car for anyone who recently got their license.

My Toyota Camry that is very dependable
My Toyota Camry is very fitable to me. It tried very smoothly and waste little gas. To fill the tank it only takes 15-20 dollars. Toyota are very nice cars and very dependable, no matter how old the car is it will still get you where you need to go for a while.
Emily P
It is old yet reliable. I recommend it.
My vehicle is really old so I do not see why anyone would want to buy it. Nonetheless, it is reliable and I drive it everyday. I bought it off the previous owner and it was kept in well shape for all these years. The stereo is the best part it is loud.

The most important things others should know about my car is that it can be considered dangerous at times due to tire issues.
I do not like my vehicle. Although it is completely paid for, it often gives me mechanical problems. I rather a car payment on a more reliable car than spend money on an old one.

It stalls too much and has exhaust problems
It stalls a lot the exhaust pipe broke the buyers taped it with exhaust tape it stalls when you make a hard left or right

The gas mileage is the best I've ever experienced
I bought my Toyota Camry used. It had 120,000 miles on it. It still runs really well no problems with engine so far. I put five in gas and can go for almost 100 miles. The seats are a little uncomfortable if you're planning on a long trip. The trunk has a lot of space to put luggage
Alexander S
My Durango and why I'd never buy one again
03 Durango! It's good but the small things, knobs breaking, window motors going out etc. Good engines though. I absolutely hate that you can't fold the back seats down flat. If you want a SUV buy a 4Runner, honestly. The gas mileage is like 13... I might as well have a full sized truck pulling a camper at all times. The 4wd is very good though, and it's very easy to use, probably the most reliable component on the truck. It's not bad if you have 7 kids either.
Hannah N
My aunt own that car first.
It was easy to driving. My car couldn't work well in this time because it is too old and many things need to be fix. It cost me a lot to fix the card in this time.
What Do Critics Say About the 2003 Toyota Camry?
- Edmunds found the 2003 Toyota Camry to be comfortable and roomy with plenty of high-end safety and comfort features, but they felt the V6 engine was underwhelming.
- Kelley Blue Book users find the 2003 Camry to be reliable and comfortable, and they love how it gets-up-and-goes when you hit the accelerator. The dated styling and “ugly hubcaps” earned a few knocks.
- Consumer Reports note that the car runs nice and quiet and the overall feel of driving it is pleasant and easy-going.
What Common Problems Does the 2003 Toyota Camry Have?
There are 265 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for vehicle speed control, with the most recent having been registered in June of 2022. One of the most common issues being reported: the car may just shut off for no reason.
There are more than a hundred complaints on file for engine cooling, with coolant leaks, overheating, and rattling being reported. This often comes down to a loose head bolt and has been addressed by a service bulletin, but not by recall.
Airbag complaints number close to one hundred, with drivers reporting airbags failing to deploy in the event of an accident. But, the last reported incident was in late 2021, and there have only been four reports in the last four years.
In total, the 2003 Toyota Camry has only racked up a single recall, for the side curtain airbags, three investigations (all closed), and 811 owner complaints. Those are excellent numbers for a twenty year old mid-size.
How Long Will the 2003 Toyota Camry Last?
Data from RepairPal tells us that you can expect to spend around $388 a year in maintenance costs on the 2003 Camry. Not bad given the car’s age. The most expensive common repair would be exhaust pipe replacement, starting at $509, but this is a once-every-ten-years kind of repair.
A Consumer Reports survey reports that a Toyota Camry should get you to 200,000 miles no problem. Now and then you’ll see one hit the market with twice that number on the odometer, but since you can’t always be sure how well the previous owner maintained the vehicle, 250,000 miles would be a more realistic expectation.
John S
The 2003 Toyota Camry is very reliable. It has had a few problems. The starter died and I had to get a new one. Currently it needs new control arms. But overall, very reliable
Jose G
No problems. Which is the problem I'm looking for a brand new car and I have no excuses because there’s nothing wrong with this car it runs great starts always no worries
Liz F
Very reliable. Just like any car that has aged, it had a few maintenance issues, but once those were fixed it ran beautifully.
Debbie L
It's reliable, I think it's a good car because it gets good mileage and feels safe.everything I said in the last statement
Anthony J
I've only had problems with the air conditioner in it, aside from that I haven't experienced any mechanical problems
Queen D
Yes it very reliable. It may have some issues with engine and engine cooling but it has been performing very well so far
Patrick M
I've been driving the car for about two years and it was previous owner so I think that it is a valuable car something that will last a long time to get you to here in there
Jen L
Not until recently since it’s pretty old I had to replace the radiator with a new one but otherwise it works great.
How Is the Technology?
Entertainment technology is dated but decent. Lower trims are pretty basic with your usual radio, tape-player, CD-player setup, but the XLE gets you get a six-disc CD changer and a couple extra speakers, bringing the total up to eight.
Safety technology is likewise good, but dated. Anti-lock brakes, multi-stage airbags, emergency locking retractors and pretensioners for the seatbelts. Just don’t expect to find lane-keep assist or rearview cameras in a 2003 mid-size.
Is the 2003 Toyota Camry a Good Value?
The 2003 Toyota Camry is absolutely a good value. Typical listing prices for models in the 150,000 mile range rarely top $6,000, and you can go way cheaper than that if you’re willing to take your chances with a private buyer.
- LE – $5,035
- SE – $5,016
- XLE – $5,609

What Engines Come In the 2003 Toyota Camry?
- The starter engine is a four-cylinder 2.4L delivering 157 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque.
- If you want a little more oomph in the accelerator, you can look for a Camry with a 3.0L V6 cranking out 192 horsepower and 209 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are aluminum, and available in all three trim levels.
What Colors Does the 2003 Toyota Camry Come In?
How Comfortable Is the 2003 Toyota Camry?
The MacPherson strut suspension and adjustable cloth-trim seats make for a ride that still feels smooth around two decades since the car first hit the street. Unless the previous owner has been taking the car mudding, you’ll likely have no issues with the occasional bump on the road.
Whatever your trim, whatever your options, the 2003 Camry has seating for five, and you get a few inches more hip room than you would in a 2003 Accord, so most adults should have no issue fitting three to the backseat.
How Much Storage Space Does the 2003 Toyota Camry Have?
The advertised cargo capacity for the 2003 Camry is 16.7 cubic feet. That number alone doesn’t mean much, so put it this way: With the back seats up, you could fit four or five medium-sized plastic storage crates back there, so this is a mid-size that can help you move into a new apartment if need be.
Put the backseats down and you could lay a full-size adult bicycle down flat.
Three cupholders up front, back pockets for the front seats, and a bunch of little nooks and crannies all around the car mean you and your passengers will have no issue storing your phones, wallets, coffees, notebooks and tablets for the trip.
What Are the Differences Between Years?
The 2003 Toyota Camry was part of the XV30 generation, the 3rd Generation in the Wide-Body lineage. The XV30 launched with the 2001 model and was retired with the 2006 iteration.
2001: 2001 saw the launch of the new larger sedan style Camry, usurping the compact designs of earlier generations and dropping the station wagon model.
2002: Toyota gave the Camry a restyling for 2002, making the car a little taller and a little longer, with a slightly sleeker appearance.
2003: 2003 saw the introduction of the larger 2.4L inline-four engine.
2004: Toyota added a 5-speed automatic transmission to the 2004 edition of the Camry.
2005: The 2005 Camry has been subtly modernized in its design with a sleeker, narrower grille, and tighter edges for the headlights and taillights.
2006: Not much changed in the 2006 at a glance, but step inside and you’ll notice the interior has been subtly redesigned in favor of greater legroom and more storage space.
How Does the 2003 Toyota Camry Compare to the Competition?
Comparing the 2003 Camry to that year’s Accord, the Camry wins by a landslide on reliability alone. The 2003 Accord saw a whopping 24 recalls and nearly 2,000 complaints on file with the NHTSA with the powertrain generation roughly half of those reports. Few 2003 Accords still have the original transmission in working order.
It’s a closer call with that year’s Elantra. A 2003 GLS Elantra Sedan can be had for as low as $1,775, with the most affordable Camry in comparable condition being nearly twice that. The Camry earns higher marks for comfort and smooth driving, but Hyundai might be the winner for overall value here.
Still, you can’t go wrong either way. Test drive them both and see what you think.

It is reliable and will be running longer than I anticipated
I like that is is easy to take care of. I have had only a couple problems in Its lifetime and they were fairly easy to fix because many mechanics work with toyota products. My only dislike is that it is very standard and does not have any newer features like bluetooth or wireless calling.
Colleen L on March 22, 2021
My Toyota Camry se is a wonderfully, reliable, and problem-free car.
My used Toyota Camry has no problems (never has since I have owned it). It runs well, breaks well, can go from 0 to 60 in just a few seconds. It is wonderfully comfortable. It has a sunroof, radio, cassette, and CD player. It was purchased fours years ago from a dealership.

My 2003 Toyota Camry LE Sedan
I love my car. I bought it brand new in 2003. I haven't had any real issues with the car. Regular maintenance has kept it running great

Competing with mainstream and more affordable models
The "Camry" nameplate originated on a four-door sedan approximate to the Toyota Celica called the Celica Camry.
Gerald w on March 13, 2021
All you need to do is have the car serviced, but tires and batteries and you are good to go. Very dependable
The car has been very reliable. It handles very well. The gas mileage is reasonable. Have had no problems with heat or air conditioner.
Sarah G on March 13, 2021
I want it fixed and it is a very nice car to have.
Well I went to get a oil change and the people who changed my oil supposedly didn't change it and my motor blew.
Alyssa C on March 11, 2021
This is a reliable first car!
This is honestly a great first car. It's comfortable, has a good radio, and quite spacious. The only problem I have with it the gas mileage. I go through half a tank within a week, so buying gas is a little expensive. Besides that, this car is wonderful and reliable.
leanna F on March 9, 2021
It gets very good gas mileage
It is very good on gas i put a lot of miles on my car.it has more room in it than a lot of cars. It's very reasonable to maintain
Lana M on March 4, 2021
Doesn't require much maintenance, very reliable, decent space for passengers.
My car have over 150,000 miles on it, but hasn't needed very much work other than occasional replaced batteries, oil changes, new tires and brakes. However, the engine has recently started to get really noisy, so it might be time to replace it yet.

It gets great gas mileage! I drive a lot since i'm a student attending university in michigan and I drive back home to Chicago and barely go through half a tank!
I get really good gas mileage. Easy to drive and park. Not the safest car though. Low maintenance is nice.

My driving experience with Camry.
My vehicle is a blue Camry. It performs very well despite its age. It is very comfortable to drive because is has a very smooth driving experience. The brakes are easy to control and the steering wheel does not jam or is difficult to turn. The radio works fine and the air conditioner cools and heats up very quickly.
Ana N on February 21, 2021

It's a good vehicle. It's comfortable and it looks good, mine has leather seats. Regular maintenance required. Not as complicated not as expensive in case it needs repairs.

My amazing 2003 Camry! Over 2k and still going strong.
My Camry has over 2k and is still running pretty good. The windows do not line up perfectly. The front right headlight is 'fogged' up some. The check engine light has been on for probably about a year, but does not seem to be anything serious. I bought it in 2014 and it has been reliable and comfortable. The interior is not as clean as it was when I bought it, but that is because I have two small grandchildren in it daily. Features I like include the combo CD and cassette player, power steering and two phone charge connectors. The controls are all easy to use and conveniently located. All in all it is a great car and still going strong! It is the second Toyota I have owned.
Courtney M on February 11, 2021
Toyota Camry 2003 is a very nice economical first car that will go the distance.
I do like my Camry. It get excellent gas mileage and will drive for days. I love the ac and how simple it was to fix when I thought it had broken. I simply switched the horn fuse and put it in place of the ac fuse. I no longer have a horn, which I do feel I need as I drive for a living, I will gladly give up my horn for ac to survive the summer. It is also a pretty smooth ride, especially if you put new tires and brakes on it. Most parts are fairly easy and cheap to fix as it is an American made vehicle. The factory radio in them is very nice as well. Plenty of bass to rock as hard as you want without a professional system installed.
Rakia W on February 10, 2021
The most important things others should know about my car is that it can be considered dangerous at times due to tire issues.

Great car to drive and ride in great for trips also
The Camry drives so good and rides smooth. I just love the way it drives. It's not too small or too big of a car. Plenty of trunk space. I haven't had any problems with my Camry. It is easy to maintain. I love the color and the interior is easy to keep clean. Plenty of legroom. Love the change holder that is beside the steering wheel. It has everything I need. I just really enjoy driving this Camry. It is the first Camry I have ever owned and I hope this one last me a long time. I would purchase another Camry. Just all around good car!

2003 Toyota Camry: A reliable and a gas saving vehicle. Great family vehicle.
My 2003 Toyota Camry is a great family car. It has plenty of legroom and is comfortable to drive. It is great on gas and rides smooth. It still looks sleek and modern and is in great condition. It is great on gas and all the power appliances still work. She is reliable and still works like brand new. All of her features work and she runs like a champ!

Toyota Camry is Toyota-lly amazing
My car is a Toyota Camry, it's not the nicest looking and it definitely isn't a sports car but it is very dependable. It is very good on gas. The parts to the car are very affordable when they need to be replaced. A lot of the parts are very easy to find and most are very common.
Crystal J on January 30, 2021
It will run for a very long time, I really don't have any complaints about the car everything still works perfect on it and I plan on having it for more years to come.
Toyotas are very good cars, they have a very long lifespan from what I see and have researched. The only complaint I could have is cosmetic as in, paint job wearing on the hood and upholstery on the roof is going to be sagging before long.
Sandra S on January 29, 2021
Its drives really well and it gets great gas mileage.
My Toyota camry runs well. The Toyota also has excellent gas mileage, up to 30 miles per gallon. The very best is it is paid for.
Rita M on January 28, 2021
Consistently reliable make and model. I will likely buy the same make and model.
This car is very reliable, and easy to fix. The paint job has lasted even in the Texas sun. It has a smooth ride and the gas mileage is excellent. The seating is comfortable, even for a short person like me. The angle of the windshield makes it easy to see ahead and the high beams make it easy to see the road at night.

What I like and dislike about my 2003 Toyota Camry
The car runs really nice, and smooth. My only issue with the car is that the air conditioning/heat does not work properly so it does not cool that well, or heat up that well. The color is a nice blue, except is chipping and fading from age/sun. Everything else about the car is wonderful.
Jessica S on January 19, 2021
Camry's will last a really long time if you keep up on the maintenance.
It doesn't run very well - I need a new transmission. But I like that it's compact. It also has good gas mileage and has a big trunk.
Sarah M on January 15, 2021
4 cylinder which allows me to get impeccable gas mileage
I would like a newer model with better technical advances; such as, a reverse camera, Bluetooth (hands off), and a hybrid to help improve our economy and environment. I would also like a car that doesn't squeak when I turn the wheel to complete a U turn, it's old but it definitely shows.
Alena G on January 2, 2021
The steering fluid runs out so you have to fill it up.
I like that is does not take up a lot of gas. I like the size of my car, it is not too big and not too small. I worked hard to buy my car so I love it.
Eleanor K on December 31, 2020
One thing I can depend on.
I purchased this 2003 Toyota Camry le on december 21, 2002/ it was a necessary purchase, my other car was in the garage more than out. I wanted a black car, but my relative thought this desert tan would be a better car for me to keep clean. And I agree, it is. The Toyota has been a very reliable care for me in so many ways.In the years I have been driving it, I have replaces the tires, had new brakes, windshield wipers, and a few other minor things done to it. Although I have low mileage on my car, 40 thousand plus, this has been the most dependable car. I plan on keeping it for as long as it serves me.
Rachel W on December 30, 2020
Does well getting me to where I need to go.
Gets me to and from college twice a month from home to another state well. Plus does well with regular running. Keep up on oil changes more quickly than every 3000 miles or 3 months but it helps it run better overall. Just recently had brakes go out and are in the works of being replaced, also had a washer pump go out but was easy to replace. Overall a decent car.
Rosemary S on December 28, 2020
Good reliable car, I would recommend my type of car to anybody.
My Camry is just right, only complaints would be; more leg room for the driver. Perhaps more headroom for my passengers. Other than that, I really have no complaints!

Great car. Great value car.
I have been driving my vehicle for ten years. I have enjoyed the way it drives on a highway and traffic. My vehicle starts up every morning in the winter and summer. I have maintained the vehicle with oil changes throughout the years on a regular basis and it has been a great car.
Therese W on December 20, 2020
Love our car. We have owned it for years and are very happy with it. I would recommend it.
It is reliable. It is comfortable and we have had it since 2003 and have been totally satisfied with everything about it. We take it to Firestone or the dealer on a regular basis and it has served us well.
Sarah K on December 10, 2020

I love what a easy and smooth ride it is. The trunk is huge! It fits enough people comfortably. Other than it getting old. I love everything about my car.

Can help with storage/ moving.
Does not have good control on snowy or icy roads. Needs more gas mileage, and less time fueling up at the gas pump.

Great car low mileage and dependable and will take it out of town long distance.
No problem it is very dependable[enable, great on gas, not a lot of maintenance on it, I will keep it till die, it has low very mileage on it. I know the car very well. And I am not afraid to take it out of town, I would buy another one. I love the size, not too big or little.

Reliable Honda Accord is a winner.
My vehicle is incredibly reliable and dependable. It is comfortable and I really like the heated leather seats. Even more importantly it is safe and it is easy to drive. I trust my daughter, a new driver, to drive it as well. Also, it has some nice things like a sunroof that I enjoy.

If you take care of it, it will be reliable.
Like how comfortable it is. Dislike how much work it needs now that it's getting older. No real complaints.

Toyota drivers have very high satisfaction levels are: there Toyota. Toyotas keep on going (as long as you take care of it).
We bought this Toyota new in 2003 and it's still going strong. I have over 230,000 miles but there is never a glitch when driving it. I would buy a Toyota again in a minute!

Very reliable, although it is not the nicest car it does the job safely
One of the doors does not match the other (slightly off in color). It is very loud which I don't like. But it is very reliable I can drive long distances (4 hours round trip on the highway to go home) without worry.

That should be comfort when driving a long long distance. Small cars can run well with good fuel efficiency but we need to sacrifice the comfort to some extent.
I like the car because of reliability, endurance, and fuel efficiency. It's been almost maintenance free and runs well even the mileage went over 200K miles.

Good condition, cold ac , runs like new
This is my first car and it's old but hasn't gave me any problem yet it drives smooth, has cold ac , nice radio . If you don't have a lot of money get this car it last a long time .

It is my car. It safely gets me where I want to go.
I like my car because it is a good size. It is easy to drive. It has been "faithful", getting me safely wherever I want to go. It also has room for passengers.
